The story
Launched in January 1985 by computer whizz Sir Clive Sinclair, the C5 was a battery-powered trike you steered lying almost flat, pedals included so it could legally count as a bicycle. Motoring journalists and the public were baffled and a little terrified of it on busy roads, sales collapsed, and production stopped within months — yet today surviving C5s turn up in museums and are eagerly collected as a beloved symbol of 1980s ambition gone wonderfully wrong.
