The story

The Raleigh Chopper was the bike every 1970s kid wanted: high-rise handlebars, a banana seat and that gear lever on the crossbar. Launched in 1969, it sold in the millions and arguably saved Raleigh. Production ended in 1982, but the Chopper still exists — Raleigh has reissued it several times for nostalgic grown-ups. The bike that rescued a British institution began, by designer Alan Oakley's own account, as a sketch on the back of an envelope on his flight home from America.
