The story
Launched by Raleigh in 1976, the Grifter was built to look like a motocross scrambler, complete with chunky tyres, a padded seat and a car-style twist-grip gear changer on the handlebars. It became the ultimate playground status symbol, with kids racing each other and pretending the hollow plastic 'fuel tank' between the frame tubes was full of petrol - it was actually just empty space, though many stashed sweets in it. Production ended in the early 1980s as tastes shifted towards BMX bikes, and while new ones vanished from shop shelves, restored originals are still treasured by collectors today.
