The story
Subbuteo turned the front room carpet into Wembley, with players flicking tiny weighted footballers across a green baize pitch using their fingernails. Fans could buy team sets painted in the colours of their favourite club or country, and the England set pictured here would have been a prized possession for many a 1970s schoolboy. The game survived corporate ownership changes and a near-disappearance in the 2000s, and faithful sets are still sold today.
