The story

Ceefax was the BBC's teletext service — news, sport, weather and TV listings in blocky graphics, summoned with the remote control's text button. Launched in 1974 as the world's first teletext service, it was how millions checked the football scores before the internet. It no longer exists: the digital switchover killed it, and the final pages went dark in October 2012. Best of all, none of it was meant to happen — teletext began as BBC research into subtitling for deaf viewers, hiding text in the unused lines at the top of the picture. Somebody realised the same spare lines could carry the football scores.
